Swansea Open Show 2012 Critique

Swansea and District Canine Club, Saturday 11th February 2012.   Deerhounds - Jenny Grimshaw - Jamalison.

My thanks to this excellently run club for my invitation to Judge and to all the exhibitors for the opportunity to go over their dogs. All the dogs were beautifully turned out.   I really enjoyed my day.

Special Yearling 3 (2 abs)

First. Best Puppy. Mr S and Mrs K Codd's - Greyflax Over the Moon. Typical 10 month old  puppy enjoying his second show outing.  Beautiful head.   Neat small ears, darkening muzzle and aqualine nose, correct scissor bite.  Elegant length of neck onto correct shoulders.  Good length of body and fallaway to strong tail. Maturing coat.  When he settled he moved well.    It will be interesting to see how he develops.   Well presented and well handled.

Graduate 2

First. Best of Breed  - Parson's and McKinnon's - Claonaiglen Buie.  Rising 3 year old bitch with a coarse hard coat.   Correct confirmation with strong well knuckled feet and angled pasterns.  Feminine head with dark eye and neat small ears.  Correct bite and tapered muzzle.  Good length of neck onto well angled shoulders, correct length in body with rise of loin and fall away.  Low set hocks and again strong correct  rear feet.   She was fit and well muscled.  This bitch offered a lot of what I like in a Deerhound and moved well in the class, although she did slip on the mat at one corner, which caused her to become slightly lame in the Challenge.  She won on her sparkling prescence, sound construction, correct coat and dark eyes.

Second -Merrick's Clanardwood Sol of Pedlarspath. Another rising three year old bitch.  Did not have the bone of class winner and had sparse coat (this girl had a litter in October 2011). Finer, narrower head with lovely  dark eye. Correct scissor bite.  Good depth of chest and tuck up onto correct loin. A little upright in pastern.    She ringed her tail when moving and did not move out as well as the winner of this class.

Limit  3

First - Parson's and McKinnon's Claonaiglen Fionnelighie. Rising 3 year old bitch. Quality bitch  with sound, correct construction, from same kennel as BOB. Dark grey correct coat.  Well knuckled strong feet, sloping pasterns.  Elegant back and front angulation and moved well.  I preferred the head of the Graduate bitch.

Second  - Llewellyn's  Martahari Mermaid.  Different type from winner of class, with lighter grey and more prolific coat.  Not as well angulated as winner.  Moved well.

Open Dog - 2 (1 abs)

First - Llewellyn's Martahari Menjangen.  Adult male dog, who really looks good. He has a  lovely masculine head.  Correct strong bone.   Neat ears and correct mouth.  Good reach of neck, depth of chest and tuck up onto strong well angled quarters with low set hocks. A dog I really liked, he moved very well.

Open Bitch 2 (1 abs )
First -  Merrick's Claonaiglen Shiel of Pedlarspath.  Elegant bitch with neat ears, dark eye and correct bite.   Light grey coat and carrying a little weight today.  She did not appear to be enjoying herself  and did not move as well as the class winner.

Kind regards,

Jenny Grimshaw.

This was the first time I have given a CC to a puppy in such a  large slow maturing breed. Not a decision I took lightly. A few with very small  teeth. Wish more were shown in full coat.

PD
(2) 1 Peach's Kilbourne  Nico. Really lovely dog to start, full of quality, 8 mths and quite forward,  super head, typical expression, fairly strong neck, well laid shoulder, long  ribs, super topline and rear, very true for age, could just have a slightly  longer stride in front, should do a lot of winning. CC and BP today. 2 Taylor's  Kilbourne Usher To Ormanstar. Has a really lovely head, fair neck and front,  good depth of chest and very well ribbed, well angulated rear but can still  strengthen in rear, so very true in front, most promising.

JD
(3) 1  Helps' Beardswood Quinlan. Tpy and well muscled dog, masculine head with  strength of muzzle and super eyes, strong neck, plenty long enough, could have  more lay of shoulder, grand depth of chest, good ribs and turn of stifle, can  improve in hind action, rather close, has a tendency to flatten on the move but  liked his very light action. 2 Schaanning Ling's Beardswood Quiver. In very  good muscle and a pleasing outline, would like a stronger muzzle, ring in tail  detracts, balanced angulation, needs to develop yet in body and firm in his  movement, good legs and feet and harsh jacket. 3 Aston's Stranwith Slate To  Balgaled.

PGD
(3) 1 Wragg's Neroche Irving. Best for type in class,  masculine yet elegant dog, has a balanced head but rather light in eye, as were  a few, neat ears, fair neck, nice front and very good tight deep feet, long  ribs, graceful topline and very good rear, goes away true but slightly tied in  front. 2 Hawkins' Kwaricott Corelli. He excels in movement, so very true up and  back, maybe a bit heavy and can look long and flat in topline, lengthy neck,  angulation is well balanced, well filled front, ribs go well back. 3  Wilkinson's Sireadh Chase.

LD
(6, 2) 1 Spence &Heathcote's Hynbdsight  Riddick. Masculine dog who has a slightly better shoulder than second,  masculine head, could be tidier in ear, strong neck, well filled chest,  slightly flat in topline, very good bend of stifle and hocks, harsh jacket,  springy gait and when settled lengthy and low stride. RCC. 2 Meer's Kilbourne  Harvey At Lordswell. Liked the curves on this dog very much and has a good coat  of correct length, could be a bit more of him everywhere for a male, lengthy  head, typical expression, liked his topline, well ribbed back, balanced angles.  3 Seymour-Jackson's Ghiltan Hero.

OD
(3, 1) 1 Girling's Ch Pyefleet Rollo.  Liked the strength of this hound with true out and back movement, could be  stronger in muzzle and better in eye, correct neck and very well laid shoulder,  well bodied with curvy topline, good feet, well bent stifle and correct hocks,  could have a tad more leg for his length. 2 Hawkins' Kwaricott Asclepius. Typy  outline, lengthy head with good eyes and ears, would prefer more underjaw,  super neck, quite a well made front, lengthy body and a bit flat, correct croup  and hind angulation but is a bit soft.

VD/B
(5, 2) 1 Faircloth's  Beardswood Niamh At Calbraidh. Lovely type bitch with springy stride, feminine  in head, strong neck, fairly good front, well bodied, correct topline and rear,  pleases on the move. 2 Lucas &Dargonne's Sorisdale Mackechnie For Packway.  11 years and is a very good type, could carry slightly more weight, feminine  head, planes a bit off, good neck, feet are flattish now, well turned stifle,  tidier up and back than 3, Barret's Stranwich Morag.

GCD/B
 (3) 1  Faircloth's Beardswood Niamh At Calbraidh. 2 Seymour-Jackson's Cassacre  Aelfrida Of Ghiltan. Femine and shapely bitch, has a lengthy head, slight stop,  eyes ok, fair neck, a bit slack in pastern and turns feet out, deep chest, like  her curves but a bit steep in
